City sign deal Down Under as tour continues

Soccerex

City Football Group (CFG) has signed a global partnership agreement with FAL Food & Beverages, owners of the Coco Joy coconut-based beverage brand.

The new deal is an expansion of an existing partnership between the company and Australian A-League side Melbourne City, one of a number of teams in the CFG network of clubs that also includes Premier League side Manchester City and MLS franchise New York City FC.

Coco Joy's sponsorship was announced in Melbourne on Monday during Manchester City's ongoing pre-season tour of Australia. As part of the new deal, the brand's logo is featuring on the side's shirt sleeves during their matches.

"We have had an excellent relationship with Coco Joy in Melbourne and it is a fantastic success story for that partnership that we are now going to be working together at Manchester City and New York City FC as well," said Omar Berrada, the commercial director at City Football Marketing, which brokers CFG's commercial partnerships.

"As the popularity of coconut-based beverages continues to grow, there couldn't be a better time to work with Coco Joy to bring the joy to our fans all over the world."

The next match in Man City's summer tour is an International Champions Cup clash with Italian side AS Roma on Tuesday.

Josep Maria Bartomeu elected FC Barcelona president

Josep Maria Bartomeu has been elected as president of FC Barcelona for a six-year term.

Bartomeu received 54.63 per cent of the vote, which took place at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium on Saturday. The turnout was the third highest in the club's history with 47,270 members voting, 43.12 per cent of the electoral census of Barcelona's 109,647 members.

Bartomeu was formerly Barcelona's vice-president and has stood in as president of the Spanish club since January 2014, after Sandro Rosell resigned amid a row over the transfer of Brazilian star Neymar.

During his reign as stand-in president Barcelona achieved the treble, winning the Spanish La Liga title, the Uefa Champions League and the Spanish league cup, the Copa del Rey.

In second place, with 33.03 per cent of the vote, was former president Joan Laporta, who held the role between 2003 and 2010. The result was declared by member of the electoral board and managing commission Jordi Calsamiglia.

ESPN Brasil picks up rights to La Liga

ESPN in Brazil has picked up the live broadcast rights to La Liga for the next five years.

The pay-TV broadcaster defeated a rival bid from Esporte Interativo for the Brazilian rights to the Spanish league, and will reportedly sub-licence certain rights to fellow pay-TV broadcaster Fox Sports.

ESPN and Fox Sports already have sub-licence agreements in place for the rights to broadcast the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A leagues.

The agreement follows a €600 million deal struck by Telefónica for the domestic rights to La Liga last week, following a decree by the Spanish government that broadcast rights will be sold collectively from next season.

Spanish telecommunications group Mediapro currently holds the licence to market the rights to La Liga internationally.

Beckham Miami United receive approval for Miami stadium

Soccerex

David Beckham's investment group, Beckham Miami United, has reached an initial agreement over plans for a proposed privately funded 25,000-seater arena in Miami.

The agreement is for the new stadium, planned to accommodate Beckham's proposed new and as yet unnamed Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise for the start of the 2018 season, to be built next door to the Miami Marlins' Marlin Park. The site was previously home to the Orange Bowl, where the Miami Dolphins National Football League (NFL) franchise played before it was demolished to make way for Marlins Park in 2008.

The Miami Marlins baseball team is a member of the Eastern Division of the Major League Baseball (MLB) National League.

A spokesman for Beckham Miami United said: "Today's meeting with Mayor Regalado was another positive step toward bringing a world class soccer club to Miami. We're still in the early planning stages and several viable options still exist, but our preferred stadium location is the former Orange Bowl site.

"David, Marcelo and Simon are thrilled by the initial outpouring of support we've received from our fans and we're excited about sharing our plans with the city, county and community soon."

The news comes after more than 18 months of discussions with city lawmakers over a potential location for the stadium in Miami.
