Like Tom Watson and Sir Nick Faldo before him these past few days, Bernhard Langer stood on the Swilcan Bridge and waved to spectators lining the 18th fairway at the Old Course. It could be a final farewell to St Andrews for the German two-time Masters champion, who will be 63 when the Open returns to the Old Course in 2021 for the 150th edition. "I have a lot of memories of this place. Maybe it's the last time," he said after carding an even-par 72 to complete his 30th Open one over (74-70-73-72). Langer is still going strong and on now heads to Sunningdale where from Thursday he will be defending the Senior Open title he won last year. Langer's Open debut came at Birkdale in 1976 when still only 18. He missed the cut at 17 over par, earning prize money of 100 pounds (155 dollars at today's rates). His next Open - and first at St Andrews - came two years later when he again missed the cut. The story goes he could not afford a caddie or accommodation and slept in his car - earning 175 pounds for his two rounds. "Not many know that story," he said when reminded of his St Andrews Open debut. Within three years Langer was runner-up at the 1981 Open at Royal St George's, Sandwich, and in 1984 at St Andrews tied with Tom Watson for second behind Seve Ballesteros. He has now made seven Open appearances at the Old Course, where 10 years ago he was back in contention when he tied for fifth behind winner Tiger Woods. Langer also came close in Opens outside St Andrews, with four third place finishes, in 1985 (St George's), 1986 (Turnberry), 1993 (St George's) and 2001 (Lytham). | |||||
