Bayern Munich's Spanish head coach Pep Guardiola
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola backs independence
for Catalonia and is standing in regional elections for a separatist
alliance, Spanish media reported Monday.
Guardiola, 44, is placed last on the candidate list for the election
and wishes to highlight his support for independence rather than be
elected himself to the regional parliament in Barcelona, Spanish
state radio (RNE) and the El Pais newspaper said.
His candidacy was confirmed by the Democratic Convergence of
Catalonia (CDC) MEP Ramon Tremosa on Twitter.
The separatist parties CDC and the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC)
are joining forces with a common list for the September 27 election
in pursuit of an independence referendum.
Spain's central government has repeatedly stated Madrid will not
allow Catalonia to secede as it would be in violation of the
constitution.
