Zenit St. Petersburg's Hulk
Brazilian star striker Hulk has claimed that
racial slurs are a part of daily life in football in Russia, the
country which will host the 2018 World Cup.
"That's what happens in the Russian league in every game," the Zenit
St Petersburg forward said Monday. "I used to let it upset me. Today
I blow kisses to the fans."
Instances of racism in Russian football are not always reported
abroad but that is likely to change during the World Cup.
"If it happens (then) it would be disgusting and ugly," Hulk told
international journalists at the Zenit training ground. Hulk himself
was subject to monkey chants by Torpedo Moscow fans in March while
Emmanuel Frimpong of Ufa was abused by Spartak Moscow supporters in
the season-opening game last Friday.
The 23-year-old Ghanian Frimpong responded with a hand gesture and
was promptly sent off for his retaliation, leading Russian sport
minister Vitaly Mutko to indirectly lay the blame on him.
The draw for the 2018 World Cup qualifying groups takes place in St
Petersburg on Saturday.
